Sun Students Views and Review is back again with yet another contest for the students. This time the Moolah is huge and so also the Contest. This reivew contest is about MySQL and Glassfish application server.

How to participate?

Download MySQL and Glassfish.
Use the to create a Web Application ( Using any Programming Language- Java ,PHP, Ruby or Python)
Submit complete source code of the application, user documentation, developer/administrator documentation including application installation instructions, and appropriate executables as a project at java.net
Write reviews of MySQL 5.1 Community Edition database and GlassFish v2 UR2 application server based on your experiences as you developed the web application.

What to submit for the event?

Submit the Link to the java.net project
Submit the Blog link of the review written.

Use the Submission form for both of them.

The contest is held in two categories

Categrory 1: For all Sun Campus Ambassadors
Category 2: For all Non Sun Campus Ambassadors

Prizes:

Separate prizes for each category

Grand prize of $500 in Visa debit card.
Five chances to win a prize of $250 in Visa debit card.

Fast Track to Java- Day 3 Summary

The third day also saw same amount of crowd. The java resources DVD along with the Netbeans DVD were given out on the third day of the workshop. Exception Handling, File I/O, MultiThreading were the topics covered during the day. The session was a very short one- For about One and Half hour- Thanks to the power cut. We were running on UPS with some 1.5 hour backup. So i had to finish off the session at the earliest. At the end of the session i had few MCQs which i discussed among the participants. I also spoke about the Sun Academic Initiative in brief.

The 3- Day Java Workshop being the first event of the year went off well and saw a good amount of crowd. There were 130+ registrations and we had to restrict to a small number of registrations due to the capacity of the Seminar Hall. I had earlier planned to conduct it in the Computer Center but then couldn’t get the permission for the same.

FastTrack To Java- Day -2 Summary

The second day of the workshop had fewer participants than the first one- There were 50 participants. Today i covered the OO Concepts in Java and also spoke about Statics, Interfaces, Inheritance, Numbers, Strings, Overloading, Overriding and passing variables to methods. Its was a pretty fast session and had to cover lots of concepts. Today i gave away the prizes for the winners of the Session-1 Contest.

The session was held at the Main Seminar hall. As decided we had Sesison-2 contest. This time the questions were much simpler and one question was based on adding the command line arguments entered.

Personally today’s session was a bit high on concepts. Actually i wanted ppl to have an overview of all the concepts involved in Java- Some important concepts which they may find it difficult to understand once they go back and read. I explained some finer points in many places.

FastTrack To Java- Day -1 Summary

One thing that was going on in my mind throughout the day was- How to accommodate 130 people? We got an overwhelming response and had to restrict the registrations to 130. On the Day-1 i.e August 1st some 80 odd people turned up. But then we even took on the spot registrations and there were many who wanted to attend the workshop. The workshop was scheduled to start at 5:30, but we had to delay it by 15 minutes as people kept coming. I started off the workshop at 5:45 and it went about till 7:30. The first session mainly dealt with basics of the language like Data Types, Variables, Arrays, Control Statements, Operators and basic OOP Concepts. I had included code demos which i did using Notepad and command line compilation. The audience ranged from MCA to the freshers.

There were many queries which i took at the end of the session. We had also arranged a small competition where in the participants were given 9 questions to solve out which we had to choose 3 best- First one would get a TShrit and the other two would get a Pen and Open Solaris Starter Kit. The response was pretty good, though the questions were bit higher level. So for the next session i will stick to some simple, tricky questions. Photos will be uploaded soon on the blog. Watch out for more action from Day-2 and Day-3
